We are an award-winning family bakery established in Pembrokeshire, Wales, neighbouring Llawhaden Castle. We use traditional baking methods and the finest ingredients to bring you a taste of Welsh heritage.


Tan Y Castell Bakery is the creation of Paul and Linda Mear. Paul’s family have been baking for over 200 years. In 1997 Paul started producing our famous Welshcakes at his family farm using an old Aga, selling them to local shops around his farm. The couple moved the business into an old cottage and set-up a kitchen to meet demand; selling to guest houses, cafes, restaurants and hotels.

The business continued to grow from strength to strength with demand exceeding supply and space becoming increasingly limited. As a result, Paul found a unit in Narberth located in a small business park, not far from where he was living. During this time Paul was covering two jobs; one lecturing at a local college, the other making Welshcakes until the early hours of the morning! A local supermarket then approached Paul and asked him to supply some of their Welsh stores.

Today, after over twenty years of hard work, late nights and perfecting our production, Tan Y Castell now has three large purpose-built bakeries spread over six industrial units, employs over a hundred full-time staff and has an extensive product range. We are pleased to be one of the most recognised and respected bakeries in Wales, making the best-selling Welshcakes on the market and to have several award-winning (and tasty!) products.
